Have Fun!

Mary Poppins:
[Spoken]
In ev'ry job that must be done
There is an element of fun
You find the fun and snap!
The job's a game

[Sung]
And ev'ry task you undertake
Becomes a piece of cake
A lark! A spree! It's very clear to see that

A Spoonful of sugar helps the medicine go down
The medicine go down-wown
The medicine go down
Just a spoonful of sugar helps the medicine go down
In a most delightful way
A Spoonful of Sugar, lyrics
When I went to say goodbye to my mother this morning, I noticed she was getting ready to go out.

"You're going out then?" I said.

"Yes, I am."

"Well, have fun!"

"I don't know about having fun."

"Where are you off to?" I said. "Are you going to visit your friend?"

"No, I'm off to the surgery to have a flu jab. It's about time I had one."

"Have fun!"

"I will try and have fun with the flu jab," she chuckled. "Actually, you can have fun with everything. It's just that people don't see things that way."

"That's what I believe anyway. That's why I always say have fun."

"Well, you have fun whatever you get up to," my mother said.

"I will."

I believe that every moment is an opportunity to have fun. It doesn't matter what it is, there's a lot of fun to be had. Seeing life as fun transforms everything, even things I don't particularly like doing, from it being a chore and tedious to effortless and joyful. Seeing life as fun reveals the magic and wonder of life; and the ordinary becomes the extraordinary.

I'm not a huge fan of household chores but when I inject fun into them, I discovered cleaning can be effortless when I just relax and let it happen. I also discovered there are invisible beings who are willing to help in all aspects of life when I let them; and life becomes magical.

I don't particularly like cold weather but I think it's fun dressing up in a warm coat. The weather has also revealed a lot about myself. I find that when I'm not thinking, I feel neither hot nor cold. I also find when I focus on the weather being cold, it feels colder. However, when it's cold and I focus on feeling warm, it feels warm to me and the weather gets milder. The same is true for hot weather. If it's hot, I focus on it being cool and I end up feeling cool even if it's supposed to be a heat wave. Again, when it's stifling hot and I don't think about it, I feel neither hot nor cold.

I used to find travelling on buses pretty tedious until I focused on the fun element. Now my bus journeys are filled with magic and wonder.

Seeing everything as fun reminds me of dogs' attitudes. They seem to find delight in everything. Even when they are meant to be working, they seem to have fun doing so.

Incidentally, I emailed a friend and asked if he wanted to meet up later. Part of his response was: "Sounds quite fun." It's not surprising really as I've always found it fun being with this particular friend.

Every moment is full of fun. Have fun, whatever you get up to!
